Selena Fan Memories - Tommie's Story

I met Selena through my mom.  My mom had met her in 1989.  I met her on May 9th, 1991.  I was 10 years old.  Selena had just turned 20 the month before.

I was real shy when I first met her. I really didn't talk to her too much. She asked me how old I was & I told her. She asked what grade I was in & I told her. My mom had told her that earlier that day I had made my first Communion & my only wish for that day was to meet her!

She was so sweet & nice.  We took a picture together & she gave me her autograph & that was about it. Then she went over to talk & sign autographs for some people in wheelchairs.

From then on I was hooked.

When Rodeo 1993 came around, I was like “I want to go see Selena!”  So my mom got the tickets & we went! I was so happy!

I didn't get to talk to her, but I got her attention when the car came around with her! I was practically hanging over the railing, but I got her to see me.  She waved at me.  Of course, I waved back.

Then after Rodeo 93, she came back for a 4th of July show!  Selena y Los Dinos played at a grand opening for a Ballroom called "The Player’s Ballroom".  My mom & I were right up front.  So when she came out we had good view of each other.  It took her awhile for her to see me.  Then finally she saw me & waved & I waved back.  Then after that she would come over & sing to me & I would sing back to her.  Then she shook our hands & kept singing & dancing. They took a break, then they came out again.

I saw her like seven or eight more times after July, 1993.  Each time they came to town, I went to see them & got to spend time with Selena & the Dinos. That's how we became friends; more like family!

She was so goofy & loved making me laugh.  She was always cracking jokes!  We just loved spending time together. She became my big sister & I became her lil' sister!

That's how it was till the end.

Thanks,
Tommie Rodriguez

Tommie with Selena

Tommie's March 31st, 2010 post on the Selenaforever.com Message Board:

Hello my fellow Selena fans/friends! It's been a longtime since I've posted on here.

I'm making' this thread to share my memories and friendship I have with Selena Y Los Dinos.

In the slideshow that I made I put a few personal pics that my mother took of her in concert from 1991-1994. Some pics are from a distance. Some are close up. I also added two pics from the Houston Rodeo 1994.

I had a few more but these were the best ones.

The 91 pics are from the very time first I met her. My dream come true!

The 93 pics are from side of backstage black pants and red bra that was at our Convention Center.

Next the pics of her in the black hat on black bra with fringe where on 7-3-93 at a ballroom called the Players Ballroom.

Next the 2 pics from the Houston Rodeo 1994. Next the pics of in the red sequence jacket and black pants are from Selena Day for Houston, Tx. on 4-8-94.

That night she opened up with "Amor Prohibido" then "Baila Esta Cumbia". During Amor Prohibido she did like a curtsy in front of my friend and smiled at her then smiled at me then did a double take because she just then realized that was me that she smiled at and then she said out loud in the mic "Mija!" (that means daughter in Spanish).

We started laughing.

After the first 2 songs she changed into white tennis shoes cause she kept sliding around on the stage floor and almost fell coming out of a spin. Then once she got into the show she sang a lot of her hits old and new.

Then during the middle of the first set she did a English medley of thee songs and dedicated the medley to me cause I gave her a keychain right before she went into the three English songs.

She wanted to thank me for the keychain and in the process of my dedication she embarrassed me by saying "I want to dedicate these next three songs to my baby sister Tommie. I love you with all heart and soul! Thank you for the beautiful Keychain! I love it!"

Then when she started the medley she sang "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson, "Looking For A New Love" by Jody Watley and "My Prerogative" by Bobby Brown. So as the night went on she did an AWESOME show.

After the gig my mom and my friend and I got to hangout with Selena and everyone backstage. Earlier that day Chris had bought a mini pin pup named Audre at the Galleria Mall. So I got to play with pup and her other dogs that were on the bus with them.

After everything was over Selena wanted to go to Wal-Mart down the road from the ballroom with me and my friend. So we went in my mom's car. Yes everyone, Selena was a good driver. Lol!

We got to Wal-Mart and went in and we bought lots of coke and food and snacks and she told me and my friend to get whatever we wanted. So we did! Lol! Then she got hungry and grabbed a king-size Reece's Buttercup and walked around the store eating and sharing the candy with us.

She got everything she got for me and my friend cause that weekend my friend and I were going to stay at my grandma's and Selena wanted to help out by buying us our snacks and food and coke so no one would have to go the store for us. Lol!

So to make a long story short we went back to the ballroom and she gave my mom back her car along with me and my friend. Of course the car was loaded down. Lol!

Ok guys I'm going to end the story now by saying Selena was a beautiful person inside and out. The best friend/sister I could ever ask for. I was blessed to have her in my life for four short years.

They are the best four years of my life that I'd never trade in the all the world.

I just want to thank the fans for keeping her memory alive!

Sel-I miss u sooo much!! I love u sooo much!! My life hasn't been the same since you were taken from us!! I miss our phone calls and your laughter!!

Forever I will be grateful to you for having a hand in making me who I am today!!

If anyone wants to know more please message me!

Thanks to all of you ~ Tommie xoxo
